Franz Essel and Gregor Hoffmann on the list of "Highly Cited Researchers"

This year's list of the world's most cited researchers in 2023 includes eleven scientists from the University of Vienna from a wide range of research areas, two of them from the Faculty of Life Sciences. "Highly Cited Researchers" are scientific researchers whose publications are most often cited in academic journals over the past decade.

The list is published each year by the Institute for Scientific Information. This year the ISI has recognized 6,849 Highly Cited Researchers from more than 1.300 institutions in 67 nations and regions. 41 of them reside in Austria.

From the Faculty of Life Sciences

Franz Essl is an Associate Professor at the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research at the Faculty of Life Sciences. He specialises in researching the effects of global change on species and habitats and is a member of the management team of the Austrian Biodiversity Council. As a leading expert in neobiota research, he investigates the effects of the introduction of non-native animal and plant species on global ecosystems, including in terms of global species extinction.

Georg Hoffmann has been a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the Faculty of Life Sciences since 2015, where he held a temporary professorship in nutritional sciences from 2012 to 2015. He is head of the research area "Evidence-based Nutritional Sciences". His research interests include biomarkers of overweight and obesity as well as tumor diseases in connection with the metabolic syndrome.
