Bacteria that reduce methane

01.03.2018

Acidobacteria play an important role in the carbon cycle. A newly discovered subspecies can also play an important role in the sulfur cycle.

The bacteria can reduce the formation of the greenhouse gas methane as an international team of scientists around microbiologist Alexander Loy from the University of Vienna reports in ISME journal. They have identified new sulfur bacteria that play an important role in the global sulfur and carbon cycles and could therefore affect the climate. [read more]
