Research at the Centre of Functional Ecology aims at gaining insight into the structures and functions of terrestrial, limnic and marine ecosystems and their microbial, floral and faunal communities. Specific importance is attached to research on microbial communities, their relations to the biotic and abiotic environment, as well as their implications for ecosystem functions in a rapidly changing environment. We use approaches of systems biology and state-of-the-art methods of single-cell and stable-isotope analysis, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics and computational methods.
