Heat or frost periods influence phosphate availability longer than expected.

Extreme weather events such as heat- and frostwaves are increasing due to climate change. These damage the bacteria and fungi in the soil and cause a disbalance of their nutrient cycles, report Maria Mooshammer, Andreas Richter, Wolfgang Wanek, et al., Department of Microbiology and Ecosystem Science. The microbes can recover after such disturbances, but their phosphate metabolism is permanently disturbed.
