Founded in 1754 by Maria Theresia, the Botanical Garden is dedicated to research and teaching as

well as a source of recreation and information for the public.

Today, the Garden covers an area of ca. 8 ha. The greenhouses are used for scientific purposes only and are not open to the public. However, a permanent "rainforest-exhibition" for visitors has been established in one greenhouse. Several guided tours are giving insights into the life of plants (EUR 5,-/ person).
