Facilities & Service
Our (Core) Facilities provide researchers with access to state-of-the-art large-scale instrumentation and advanced technologies that meet the latest scientific and technical standards. Our facilities are designed as shared resources, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and efficient use of cutting-edge equipment. Through expert support and modern infrastructure, we enable high-quality research across the life sciences.
Imaging (CIUS)
Core Facility Shared Services UBB
The Imaging facility CIUS provides training, scientific imaging support and services across microscopic scales for all academic users, and where feasible beyond. The facility offers modalities covering the whole range from stereo via light and fluorescence microscopy to scanning and transmission electron microscopy. At CIUS, you can visualise your hypothesis, prove your point with images, and see the unknown side of your object of interest.
Mass Spectrometry
Core Facility Shared Services UBB
The Mass Spectrometry facility is part of the Core Facility Shared Services UBB, offering advanced mass spectrometry capabilities and scientific expertise to support research across a broad range of applications. Our platforms combine online separation techniques with high-resolution mass spectrometry, enabling sensitive qualitative and quantitative analysis of a wide range of complex analytes, with a particular focus on proteomics.
NMR Spectroscopy
As modern drug research depends on precise knowledge of molecular structures, NMR spectroscopy offers one of the most direct routes to identifying and characterising new compounds – revealing their constitution, configuration and conformation. Firmly established at the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, our NMR expertise makes a strong contribution to research in drug discovery and development.
Life Science Compute Cluster (LiSC)
The Life Science Compute Cluster (LiSC) is a high-performance computing infrastructure for bioinformatics and computational life science, designed to be accessible also to researchers without a background in computing. It supports data analysis as well as method development and evaluation, offering research data storage with or without daily backup, interactive nodes, CPU, GPU and high-memory compute nodes, job scheduling, helpdesk support and much more.
Animal Care UBB
The Core Facility Animal Care UBB coordinates the housing of a diverse range of animal species within the University of Vienna Biology Building (UBB). It serves the Departments of Behavioral and Cognitive Biology, Neuroscience and Developmental Biology, and Evolutionary Biology. The species range from insects and spiders to fishes, birds, and small mammals. The focus of the facility is on species-appropriate housing and high-quality care.
Workshop
The Faculty's workshop designs, manufactures and repairs custom-made solutions for research and teaching – ranging from simple modifications of existing devices to the construction of complex experimental set-ups and specialised equipment. Wherever commercially available products do not meet the specific requirements of a scientific question, tailor-made components can be developed, built and adapted.
