Franz Essl and Georg Hoffmann among "Highly Cited Researches" 2024

This year's list of the world's most cited researchers in 2024 includes seven scientists from the University of Vienna from a wide range of research areas, two of them from the Faculty of Life Sciences. This award recognises researchers whose published work is in the top 1% of the most cited in their field, demonstrating significant impact within the global scientific community.

Each year, Clarivate publishes a list of Highly Cited Researchers. The selection process not only considers citation metrics but also includes qualitative analysis and expert judgment to ensure the researchers' work demonstrates broad and lasting impact. This year, Clarivate has recognized 6,886 Highly Cited Researchers from 59 countries and regions.

 

From the Faculty of Life Sciences

Franz Essl is an Associate Professor at the Department of Botany and Biodiversity Research at the Faculty of Life Sciences. He specialises in research on the effects of global change on species and habitats and is a member of the management team of the Austrian Biodiversity Council. As a leading expert in the field of alien species research, he investigates the impact of the introduction of non-native animal and plant species on global ecosystems, including in terms of global species extinction.

Georg Hoffmann has been a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the Faculty of Life Sciences since 2015, where he held a temporary professorship in nutritional sciences from 2012 to 2015. He is the head of the Evidence-based Nutritional Sciences Research Unit. His research interests include biomarkers of overweight and obesity and tumour diseases associated with metabolic syndrome.
