University of Vienna Inaugurates the Bruker Center of Excellence for Metaproteomics

Vienna, May 5, 2025 – The University of Vienna has officially opened the Bruker Center of Excellence in Metaproteomics, marking a milestone in a unique collaboration between academia and industry aimed at advancing microbiome and proteomics research.

Biochemist David Gómez-Varela (Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences) is leading this strategic partnership between the University of Vienna and the scientific instrument manufacturer Bruker. It leverages scientific innovation and state-of-the-art technology to study microbiomes and their role in environmental and human health.

The centre will serve as a hub for collaboration, discovery and training in this rapidly growing field. Experts from Bruker and scientists from the University of Vienna will work side by side to develop highly sensitive mass spectrometry methods complemented by AI-driven data analysis.

The opening ceremony brought together leading researchers from the University of Vienna, internationally renowned microbiome experts, industry representatives, and members of the University Vienna and Bruker leadership for a day of engaging talks, networking, and a lively round table discussion.

"It was exciting to see such strong momentum around metaproteomics—from scientific innovation to clinical potential," said David Gómez-Varela, Director of the Center.

"There are only four other Bruker Centers in the world. Having our Faculty chosen for this role is a great honor and inspires us even more to pursue our vision," added Manuela Schmidt, Vice-Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Co-Director of the Center.
