Drug discovery on the computer

23.11.2020

At the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Vienna, antiviral agents are among the drugs being developed. Thierry Langer and Verena Battisti explain the relevance of their research in the fight against the novel coronavirus and how they use computer-based methods to avoid animal testing.

"Our research has gained a lot of relevance due to the current pandemic. On the one hand, we are using computer methods to investigate the possible design of active substances, and on the other hand, we are synthesizing antiviral agents," says Thierry Langer from the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the University of Vienna.
"In doing so, we use both in silico methods and synthetic methods. In silico means that we approach the problem with computer-based analyses. We have different molecules that we design on the computer," explains project collaborator and doctoral student Verena Battisti from the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry further.
