It is a common misconception, especially in recent years, that big data is sufficient to understand complex relationships. But data can only be interpreted in relation to particular theoretical models and measurement systems, embedded in a larger scientific context. How this can be accomplished is what I try to convey in my research and teaching, especially in the context of human biology, health, and evolution.
